Sex Offenders are classified as follows:
Level 1 = Low Risk
Level 2 = Moderate Risk
Level 3 = High Risk
Level 1 Sex Offenders – Where the Sex Offender Registry Board determines that the risk of re-offense by an offender is low and the degree of dangerousness posed to the public by that offender is not such that a public safety interest is served by public availability, the Board shall give that offender a Level 1 designation. Information on Level 1 offenders will not be available to the public. Neither the police nor the Board has the authority to disseminate information to the general public identifying a Level 1 offender. Information identifying Level 1 offenders may only be given to the Department of Correction, any county correctional facility, the Department of Youth Services, the Department of Social Services, the Parole Board, the Department of Probation and the Department of Mental Health, all city and town police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for law enforcement purposes.
Level 2 Sex Offenders – Where the Board determines that the risk of re-offense is moderate and the degree of dangerousness posed to the public is such that a public safety interest is served by public availability of registration information, it shall give a Level 2 designation to the sex offender.
The public shall have access to the information regarding a Level 2 offender through the Local Police Department and through the Sex Offender Registry Board.
Level 3 Sex Offenders – Where the Board determines that the risk of re-offense is high and the degree of dangerousness posed to the public is such that a substantial public safety interest is served by active dissemination, it shall give a Level 3 designation to the sex offender. The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB) is the public safety agency responsible for classifying convicted sex offenders according to dangerousness and risk to re-offend. As part of the classification process, a victim of a convicted sex offender is entitled to submit a written victim impact statement to the SORB.

How to register as a classified offender?
A classified offender can register at the Mattapoisett Police Department. The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board requires law enforcement agencies to photograph and fingerprint classified offenders.
Obtaining Information About Sex Offenders Living and Working In Mattapoisett
Any member of the public who is at least 18 years of age or older may request sex offender information. The information will be provided to any person who is seeking the information for his/her own protection or for the protection of a child under the age of 18 or for the protection of another person whom the requesting person has the responsibility, care, or custody. You must request your copy of the local sex offenders in person at the Mattapoisett Police Station.
You will be required to fill out a standard request form to be submitted for review. You must bring with you, a valid driver’s license or equivalent proof indicating that you are a resident of Mattapoisett. Sex offender registry information shall not be used to commit a crime or to engage in illegal discrimination or harassment of an offender. Any person who uses information disclosed pursuant to M.G.L. C 6, S 178C-178P for such purposes shall be punished by not more than 2 ½ years in the house of correction or by a fine of not more than $1,000 or both (M.G.L. C.6, S.178N). In addition, any person who uses registry information to threaten to commit a crime may be punishable by a fine of not more than $100 or by imprisonment for not more than 6 months (M.G.L. C.275 S.4). Public official/ public employees are not civilly or criminally liable for dissemination or any omission if acting in good faith.

Pursuant to M.G.L. C. 6, §§ 178C – 178Q, the individuals who appear on the following notifications have been designated a Level 3 Sex Offenders by the Sex Offender Registry Board. The Board has determined that these individuals have a high risk to reoffend and that the degree of dangerousness posed to the public is such that a substantial public safety interest is served by active community notification.
